What is Equine Podiatry?
Equine Podiatry is a new approach to barefoot hoof care. Not to be mistaken from standard barefoot trimming, Equine Podiatry is the study of the science of the Equine hoof. If you're a happy hacker, dressage rider or endurance rider then Equine Podiatry can benefit you in the following ways:
- Gait: The trim that is used is designed to improve your horses gait: meaning that the judge is going to notice your horse moving more freely, your horse will be able to go further faster, and is going to suffer from less body work issues over a long period of time.
- No more thrown shoes! A blessing for everybody. A horse who throws a shoe mid way through a ride, before a planned ride, just before a competition is a consistent problem with shoeing. Why not have a horse that's as sound barefoot as it is shod, with improved movement?
- Less concussion! Recent studies into equine anatomy have shown that by shoeing your horse, you increase the risk of degenerative joint disease and arthritis in the lower limb considerably because of the unnatural levels of concussion that gets transferred through the shoe and into the horses lower limb.
- Treatment of pathologies: Since Equine Podiatry is a study about the science of the hoof, it is ideal for the treatment of pathologies that typically were thought to require remedial shoeing. With the methods that Equine Podiatry employs, it shows a dramatic success rate in the treatment of laminitis, navicular, gait abnormalities, thrush, white line disease and other intermittent lameness issues.
